I love my newest capoeira shirt. This was from this past batizado.

I have one negative thing about me to say, and then I have some positive things.

Negative. I feel myself getting bigger. I’ve been trying to deny it because it hasn’t affected my capacity to do anything, but I feel it in my clothes and see it in my (lack of) muscle definition. I weighed myself this morning and saw a number I wasn’t happy with. At all. And ironically I drank less this weekend than last weekend. I don’t get it. I’m eating healthy, not indulging in anything, I’m hoping it’s just because I need more capoeira and to follow my training better.

But still. Nutrition is the key factor in losing weight, and I keep thinking I’m doing things right, but maybe I am eating too much. I eat all the time. Good, nutrient dense, healthy food. I just don’t know.

Anyway. Positives. It was fucking cold outside today. 20ish degrees, with wind. And of course, tonight is Tuesday so I had my Jack Quinn’s 5k. I didn’t eat anything while there, and most importantly, I DIDN’T DRINK ALCOHOL. So that was good. I’m proud that I went even though most don’t, it was fun. I also met a kid in my A&P class that does the run and we talked (and he’s cute!). He ran in SHORTS. I was in two pairs of compression tights and yoga pants (might’ve been a bit excessive but I was okay). So yeah. Turned down beer and food. Then I went to capoeira and did the beginner and intermediate classes! It was interesting and difficult, as per usual.

Tl;dr: I ran in the cold, feel fat, and went to capoeira.

Three things I learned today in capoeira:

Clapping pushups.

One handed cartwheels.

And no handed cartwheels.

Hell yeah.

Batizado weekend is here!

So I just washed my capoeira pants..

They’re white. I washed them in bleach.

Yesterday I noticed they were dirty so I put them through the wash.

The stain is still there. It’s awkward and looks inappropriate.

But I’m sure it’s like, grease or something.

But still.

It’s awkward.

Lol. That’s pretty much a capoeira kick at its finest. Amazonas, anyone?

So hungry.

I have not been eating anywhere near enough lately. I’ve been trying but laziness plus getting up at noon and not having money to buy food at the moment is not good. Which it has definitely reflected since my weight has not budged in a few days.

I am SO hungry. I’m about to cook a massive amount of food. I discovered some food hidden from me in the freezer so I’m having.. a lot. You guys will see.

So first run of marathon training complete. Did two hours of capoeira tonight as well. I am SO SO SO sore. The outside of my calves are just done from all the capoeira. I just want to sit and watch Biggest Loser but I have to cook. Sad day.

I’ll stop whining now and get to cooking.

Well, I definitely worked out today.

Holy crap I am hungry.

So I considered not going to CrossFit today, but then my friend Paola called me to see if I needed a ride. So I figured if I go to CrossFit I could go to capoeira after.

Well, today’s CrossFit workout was pretty difficult for me.

Our “warmup” was doing this baseline workout that they use to measure progress at the beginning of every month. I would’ve been fine with it being the workout. However, it was not.

500 m row

40 squats

30 situps

20 pushups

10 pullups (red and purple bands)

Time: 7:44

The actual WOD was called Josh:

21 OH Squats (20 lbs, my coach wanted me to work on getting my squats deeper so I barely lifted anything)

42 Pullups (red and purple bands)

15 OH Squats

30 Pullups

9 OH Squats

18 Pullups

Time: 13:51

After that we did some “core assistance”, which took FOREVER:

50 GHD Situps

100 back extensions

…and that was just CrossFit.

THEN, Paola left me at the studio, it was 5pm and the first class wasn’t until 7pm.

So I was just wandering around wasting time, when 6 came around and Anne, Mago’s wife and the other head instructor, asked me to help her out with the kids class because only one kid came. She made it just as difficult as an adult beginner class! It reminded me of how long it has been since I trained.

Then I had beginner’s class. And THEN, Mago was like, “Are your ready?” “For what?” “Advanced class!” I normally go to intermediate, so I was like, crappppp. Definitely kicked my butt.

So I did:

Kid’s beginner class.

Adult beginner class.

Adult advanced class.

I was going to take it easy today. Haha.

I think part of the reason why I haven’t been losing weight..

Besides my poor habits in recent times..

I’ve been lacking in capoeira.

Capoeira has always been my secret ingredient to losing weight and feeling extra amazing. I run for fun, I do capoeira for fun, but I always see the most results when I combine the two.

Seriously, my abs? After a good day in capoeira, I look like..just amazing. Might have something to do with my after capoeira glow, but still!

Mago, see you in 2012.

This year will be about losing weight, running, and capoeira (and of course lots of other things but you know what I’m saying).

A LOT of people inspire me, like, I can barely narrow it down. Whenever I hear about anyone actively trying and pushing themselves to something new I get inspired. Of the tumblrs, the first two that come to mind are KimiJoy and RobinDoesRunning. Those two are some of the most amazing women I know and I have yet to meet them in real life. Of people I have met in real life, I think Profesora (Monitora?) Gata Brava. She is just the epitome of a great capoeirista, strong woman, and an amazingly cut body. And the way she teaches is something I love, no matter what she makes people believe they can do things, and it’s usually pretty awesome things.

I motivate myself on long runs by thinking about what I’m gonna eat/drink when I finish. When I start running, I decide on a distance and do it no matter what. So while I’m thirsty and hungry on my run, I start thinking about nice cold beer, smoothies, pizza, milkshakes- no joke. This and counting things is basically all I think about on runs. Haha.

@runningbigjoe:

What keeps me motivated is seeing progress and making goals. Whenever I go just a little faster in a long run, or sweat more lifting something at a heavy weight, that’s what keeps me going. And I like being healthy, and these things that I already enjoy help bring me closer to being healthier every day! :)

I don’t think you guys can tell too much, but this is what I look like after a hard 2 hours of capoeira. The photo doesnt exactly capture how much of a disaster my hair is. Or all the sweat on my shirt. But yeah. This is my favorite capoeira shirt. It’s getting too big for me. :)

Ew I’m all sweaty.

So I was feeling pretty sorry for myself today after my lab test this morning, and was just planning on skipping my workout today because I got 3 hours of sleep (not until AFTER my test), and just wasn’t feeling it. I need a good night’s rest in order to lift weights or I just don’t push myself.

So I didn’t go. HOWEVER, I saw this post Alicia made about meeting up with a personal trainer and she sounded so excited and motivated that I put down the Nutella (i.e. threw it away because I finished the container, I didn’t eat it all in one sitting, I just so happened to have finished it), and texted my friend to see if she was going to capoeira. Plus, it’s my weigh in day tomorrow. Haven’t weighed myself all week! I’ve been so good!

So we went! Picked the perfect day. Before class I was giving my instructor a hard time about how the beginner classes were getting way too easy, and he was like, “Okay, you asked for it…” and class was AWESOME. I could do everything he had us do,  but it was some cool sequences and I looked like I knew what I was doing.

And because that wasn’t enough, I stuck around for the intermediate class as well, and that was just as great! The sequence was super cool and I learned to do cool jumping kicks that look badass. Love capoeira (I know, I say that about running too. But I just love them both. If I could marry them I would, and it would be kickass)!

So yeah. I feel better now. Also I got some pretty awesome knee high socks in the mail that I treated myself to, I’ll show you guys when I put them on but I’m excited!

Cool stuff that happened today.

Went to anatomy lab.

Today’s topic? Muscles of the lower extremity. Aka my favorite muscles because I spend so much time working them out.

It was awesome. I got to see a real life IT band! When the instructor pointed it out, she described it as being thin and feeling like a piece of paper. And all I could think about was, “Well, that mother fucking piece of paper sure causes a ton of pain.”

Even though muscles are supposed to be one of the hardest segments of anatomy, I’m really loving it because of the practical application of it. Every new muscle they’d show us and I’d think about what exercises I do to work that muscle.

It was really cool learning that today. Made me happy. Also, cadaver toes are really gross. All rotted away and dried out. So gross. And, the cadaver still had hair on his legs and um..other areas. It was weird.

Finally, I went to the gym today and decided my focus would be capoeira stuff instead of the usual cardio cardio cardio that I do on Thursdays. It was fun.

“Class is better when you’re here.”

One of the sweetest things ever said to me.

And who said it? My capoeira instructor.

I know I say it all the time. But I really love capoeira.

Today in class, we were practicing pretty basic stuff most of the time, we were practicing this take down called vingativa, which is really cool but difficult for me to successfully perform. Then after that he had us do this kick called amazonas (or depending what group you’re from beija flor or au batido), which is like a one handed badass handstand kick, I would dare to say it’s capoeira’s signature move. Anyway, we were doing that with partners, then on our own. And at the end of class, my instructor told me to keep working at it, because I’m apparently I’m really close to being able to do it right! This is SO EXCITING for me, guys. Doing that kick is one of my goals this year. I can’t wait to do it!

:D so happy.

Oh, and went to the gym before capoeira, just did stationary bike for 47 minutes (8.6 miles, i think) and some ab work.

So capoeira was awesome as usual.

Learned this cool new movement called escorpiao which means scorpion, you get down into this sideways pushup thing then your opposite leg goes up and back towards the other person kicking them in the face (if you’re tall enough, haha).

Learned some other things.

My legs are about two or three inches shorter than my friend that is 6’4”. I really am mostly legs.

I got a 70 on my anatomy exam. Just what I hoped for. I’ll do better next time.

I’m kinda jealous of my friend, she got a 96 on the exam. But in my defense, it’s my first time taking anatomy, first time somewhat understanding biology, and it’s her 3rd time in anatomy. By now she should know it, I would presume.

Fun fact: today’s my first time in a long time that I didn’t take a nap. I’m so sleepy.

It’s bedtime. And it’s before 11:30 wooooo!
